Carillion see £34m benefit from sustainability

The latest sustainability report from Carillion, charting the company’s progress against its Sustainability 2020 public commitments, has been published. This year, every target has been independently verified by Bureau Veritas with key achievements including: a 31 per cent reduction in Carillion's carbon footprint since 2011 and a near-perfect Carbon Disclosure Project score of 98A for tackling climate change.

Of major interest is the £33.8m contribution to profit made from sustainable actions and behaviours, a figure that hugely encouraging to those attempting to marry sustainability with business, and revealing the figure will in itself encourages other companies to do so – Carillion is currently the only UK companies to publish such a figure.

In addition, 94 per cent of waste was diverted from landfill, and there was a 47 per cent reduction in waste overall and there was a 40 per cent reduction in operational water use since 2012. In terms of helping the next generation of workers, the company provided its 1000th work placement for people from disadvantaged groups and helped the 400th person into a permanent job, and Carillion retained its place as the largest trainer and employer of construction apprentices in the UK, offering over 1,700 placements in 2015.

Carillion Chief Sustainability Officer, David Picton said: "Despite many different names for sustainability, one thread remains the same: businesses without visionary engagement, inspiring stories, responsible compliance or public trust are businesses without competitive futures. Our people and our partnerships continue to build a better business, connect a better society and create better environment."
