Sky News is reporting that the Government’s hydrogen targets are set to be doubled in the wake of the energy crisis.

The new target will be launched in the Government’s Energy Security Strategy, upping the current target of 5GW to !0GW with a combination of green and blue hydrogen.

It is estimated that hydrogen could produce a third of the UK's energy supply by 2050 in line with the net-zero targets, and already £240m has been earmarked for hydrogen production in the Net Zero Hydrogen fund to co-fund projects. The UK’s plentiful wind energy is a potential source of green hydrogen through electrolysis, and the ability of the gas to store energy and be used directly makes it an attractive solution.

Kwasi Kwarteng, the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, has said that: “We’re going to grab as much market share [of hydrogen] as possible. We’re set to generate 5GW this decade, but will go further in this week’s Energy Security Strategy.”
