The German government is to set up a ‘climate cabinet’ as an emergency measure to try and achieve its climate pledges, with Environment Minister Svenja Schulze chairing the committee.
The action is necessary because Germany is not complying with its own, and EU targets, on greenhouse gas emissions, and there is currently a lack of any framework or laws that could help reach these goals. Germany has targeted a reduction 55 per cent in emissions from its 1990 levels by 2030, however it is currently failing get on track.
The committee is likely to attempt to move current guidelines for infrastructure and agriculture into law. Recently Germany finally also agreed to the phasing out of coal power, allowing them to join the Powering Past Coal Alliance of 29 countries including France, Canada, Israel, New Zealand and the UK.
