Easter’s coalless miracle

The hot and sunny Bank holiday weather has helped the UK break another energy milestone as supply went 90 hours without any input from coal-generated electricity according to the National Grid.

To date, the UK has now amassed more coal-free hours in the first quarter of 2019 than in the entirety of 2017.

The combination of reduced demand due to the hot weather and high output from solar panels has created perfect conditions to reduce consumption and add to the tally of records, building on the one set in 2017 when the UK went its first full day without coal since the 19th century.
