Gas firms link with charities to support vulnerable households

A group of gas distribution networks are to link up with a network of 60 charities and community groups to support vulnerable households at risk of fuel poverty, financial hardship and energy vulnerability.

Northern Gas Networks, SGN and Wales & West Utilities are involved, in partnership with environmental charity Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE), to deliver the next phase of their £1.15m Safe & Warm Grassroots Community Scheme.

The initiative will run until March 2028 and involves local organisations across the firms’ networks being deployed to support communities.

“By working through trusted organisations that already have strong relationships with local residents, the scheme will ensure more people can access vital help and be connected to wider services,” said the firms.

SGN community partnership manager Margaret Hamilton added: “This programme will help more organisations develop the skills and confidence needed to support the communities they know best, ensuring more customers can access the advice, assistance and services available to help them stay safe and warm.”

CSE project manager Martine Fitt said: “The success of the programme to date has demonstrated the power of grassroots organisations to reach and support people who might otherwise miss out on vital help.”
