Tesco’s 25-year partnership with Cancer Research UK reaches £75m milestone

Tesco’s partnership with Cancer Research UK has raised £75m for the charity since the link up began 25 years ago.

The partnership also includes the supermarket running health awareness campaigns and community initiatives.

“Throughout the partnership, funds have been raised through everything from bake sales, prize draws and bucket collections to marathons, treks and golf days,” said the supermarket chain.

“Tesco has also supported major Cancer Research UK flagship initiatives including being the headline sponsor for Race for Life for over 20 years, encouraging millions of people to take part in the event series and in turn support the charity's mission to beat cancer.”

Awareness raising has focused on early detection of possible cancer symptoms among customers in its stores and pharmacies.

More than 20,000 Tesco workers have also taken part in Cancer Research UK's Cancer Awareness in the Workplace programme since 2018.

“This partnership means so much to all of us at Tesco,” said the supermarket’s chief executive Ashwin Prasad.

“Together, we've done far more than just raise funds. We've worked alongside Cancer Research UK on campaigns to encourage people to get potential cancer symptoms checked, helping raise awareness and support earlier diagnosis.

“We've also joined forces to champion healthier choices and call for mandatory reporting of healthy food sales across the food industry, helping drive wider change for the nation's health.”

Cancer Research UK chief executive Michelle Mitchell added: “Every step we take towards beating cancer is thanks to our supporters and partners like Tesco, and we congratulate them on this milestone.

“This partnership represents an exceptional contribution to improving the health of the nation; they’re helping to fund life-saving research while also helping people lead healthier lives.

“Together, we’ve powered extraordinary progress, and we’re proud of the legacy we’ve built side by side.”

Tesco’s health partnerships with CRUK, as well as the British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK were named the most admired corporate and charity partnership in a report by C&E Advisory Services in 2024.
