Plug-ins surge

The UK’s biggest automotive analysis by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveals that plug-in car fleet ownership has risen 76.6 per cent in 2018, with 195,000 vehicles now on the roads.

Across the board, ownership of alternatively fuelled vehicles (AFVs) increased by almost 30 per cent last year, with more than 620,000 hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric cars now in use.

This, combined with more efficient internal combustion engines means that the average CO2 emissions have fallen to its lowest level, despite there being a record 34.9m cars on the road, down 17.8 per cent compared with 2008.
