The UN climate talks in Poland are nearing the end, with a number of issues still unresolved. As nations grapple with the huge number of decisions and potential consequences of those, the stumbling blocks seem to remain as countries most vulnerable seek faster action.
But as delegates from 196 states attempt to put flesh on the bones of the Paris agreement coming into force in 2020, there is a multitude of issues of the correct measurements, compliance and interpretation of the agreement.
It would be unfair to say no progress has been made, but issues such as recognition of the science of the IPCC - which Kuwait, Russia, Saudi Arabia and the US wanted reduced from ‘recognition’ to ‘noting’ - highlighted the gulf between those committed to the climate’s wellbeing and those that see it as an optional extra.
