Zero-carbon shipping

Major international companies including Amazon, Ikea and Unilever have pledged to use ships that use zero-carbon fuel by 2040.

Co-ordinated by the Aspen Institute Energy and Environment Program (EEP), nine companies in total have agreed to the idea, and the Institute hopes others will follow.

In 2020, EEP launched the Aspen Shipping Decarbonization Initiative (SDI) working closely with a network of cargo owner companies to develop the new initiative it named the Cargo Owners for Zero Emission Vessels or coZEV. The nine companies that have now pledged themselves to the initiative are committing to aligning their ocean shipping with the 1.5C goal and to develop a series of follow-up collaborative actions and projects.
