ALDI in the US has joined the retailers committed to reducing the global plastics crisis, pledging that by 2025 100 per cent of packaging, including plastic packaging, will be reusable, recyclable or compostable.
ALDI, where over 90 per cent of its range is exclusive, is in a strong position to influence its packaging, and working with its supplier community hopes to both meet the pledge and also reduce packaging material across its entire range by at least 15 per cent.
"ALDI has never offered single-use plastic shopping bags. And while we're pleased that we've helped keep billions of plastic grocery bags out of landfills and oceans, we want to continue to do more," said Jason Hart, CEO of ALDI US. "The commitments we're making to reduce plastic packaging waste are an investment in our collective future that we are proud to make."
In 2018 ALDI recycled more than 250,000 tons of materials in the US, including paper, cardboard, plastic and metal, across its stores with an estimated 40m customers.
