Retailer Waitrose has announced a £1m investment in its environmentally friendly farming commitments.
The investment sees it link up with the Soil Association and green farming organisation Regenified to support British farmers to produce food in ways that protect the environment.
This includes providing expert advice and tools, including using the Soil Association’s farm measurement tool Soil Association Exchange, which tracks soil health, biodiversity, water, carbon, animal welfare and social impact.
The move is part of Waitrose’s Farming for Nature programme, which has an aim of supporting 2,000 farmers and ensuring all its farming suppliers use regenerative practices by 2030.
Waitrose has also committed to being net zero across all farms it uses by 2035.
“We are delighted to bring both Soil Association Exchange and Regenified into our Farming For Nature programme,” said Waitrose director Andrew Hoad.
“Their expertise will be vital in developing our approach, providing monitoring, measuring impact and demonstrating progress.
“Our commitment to regenerative farming reflects our belief that producing high-quality food and caring for the environment go hand in hand.”
Soil Association Exchange chief executive Joseph Gridley added: “Farmers want to do the right thing for nature and their businesses, but they need clear evidence, trusted advice, and fair reward.
“Through this partnership, Waitrose is helping farmers turn robust data into practical changes on the ground, backed by the advice and support they need. It’s a powerful step towards a food system that is both climate-resilient and profitable for farmers.”
