Tottenham Hotspur has linked up with Samaritans and Mind to launch a promotional film to tackle the stigma of mental health and encourage people to ask for help.
It aims to show “how a simple conversation can be life-saving” as one in four people experience suicidal thoughts and someone takes their own life every 90 minutes, according to research cited by the club.
The film shows a young Spurs fan struggling with their mental health, who repeatedly sees a white phone box he keeps avoiding to symbolise a call to Samaritans’ helpline.
First team men and women’s team players as well as their respective head coaches Thomas Frank and Martin Ho are also involved.
The film’s launch is part of the Premier League side's wider work around mental health support with Mind in Haringey. This includes matchday mental health support, which has received more than 100 contacts since September.
“Throughout the production the team worked closely with Samaritans to ensure accuracy and depth in the portrayal of the subject matter,” said Tottenham creative lead Mark Jones.
“The phone box sequence was recorded using a live conversation between the actor and a Samaritans volunteer. This approach was taken to maintain authenticity in a moment that echoes real experiences. Everything we’ve done, including shooting on 35mm film, has been designed to show the realities of someone struggling with their mental health.”
Samaritans’ director of external engagement Sonya Trivedy added: “It’s vital we tackle the stigma that prevents people from seeking support. That’s why we’re proud of our work with Tottenham Hotspur, which encourages us all to open up if we’re struggling.
“Sharing how you feel when you’re in crisis can seem scary, but that first conversation is the most important one.
“Last year, Samaritans answered more than a quarter of a million calls for help over the festive period and our volunteers are ready to take your call 24/7 if you’re struggling this winter, even on Christmas Day, so you don’t have to face things alone.
“If just one Spurs fan goes on to call us after seeing this video, it could help save a life.”
At their next home game against Liverpool on 20 December, Tottenham will be promoting the campaign by making the white phone box in the film available for photo opportunities. Also, cards with helpline numbers will be handed out around the stadium.
