The first car in the world to be certified by the Vegan Society to offer vegan interior fittings has been unveiled by Mercedes-Benz.
Around 100 material components from suppliers for the car were tested by the charity.
This includes using replica leather on the steering wheel, seating and door trims, with the charity confirming that all materials used “contain no animal ingredients, derivatives or by-products” adding that “the interior has not been tested on animals by the company or on its behalf”.
The car firm’s chief technology officer, development & procurement and member of the Mercedes-Benz Group AG board Markus Schäfer said: “Our customers can rest assured that our vegan interior materials do not contain any animal products and meet very high testing standards.
“We are delighted to be able to offer them this assurance through our partnership with an independent and globally recognised certification organisation.”
The GLC with EQ Technology car has received the charity’s Vegan Trademark, and the certification’s sunflower logo will be on display in the car.

Mercedes-Benz aims to roll out its ‘vegan package’ across additional car models.
“With this joint project between The Vegan Society and Mercedes-Benz, we have reached a new milestone: it is the first time that a car interior has been third-party certified and approved by the Vegan Trademark,” said the Vegan Society’s client relations manager Gabriela Chalkia-Jackson.
“We are thrilled that Mercedes-Benz chose to partner with us on this journey and we have certainly learnt a lot from the two-year project.”
