Mars powers all its European snacking factories by renewable energy

Mars has announced that all 10 of its snacking factories across Europe are now powered by renewable energy.

This includes bases in the UK, Poland, the Netherlands, France, Germany and the Czech Republic and covers the production of around 900,000 tonnes of its brands including Snickers, Twiz, M&Ms, Skittles and Orbit Extra.

The push towards renewable power is part of a £1.5bn investment over the last five years by Mars in its European manufacturing network to modernise facilities, increase production and boost decarbonisation efforts.

“We measure our success not only by financial results, but also by the positive impact we have on people, the planet, and society,” said Mars Wrigley regional president Marc Carena.

“Sustainability makes good business sense and is at the heart of our strategy, and we are committed to making a meaningful difference ensuring that today's actions create lasting benefits for future generations.”

Mars aims to be net zero by 2050.

“In addition to investments to reduce and convert energy consumption, Mars has purchased Guarantees of Origin (GO) certificates for the remaining renewable electricity and biomethane equivalent to the amount of electricity and natural gas used in the company’s direct operations for confectionery in Europe,” it added.
