Health firm supports older LGBTQ+ community

Health information platform Patient.info is working with Yorkshire based charity Out Together to develop digital inclusion and support services for older LGBTQ+ people.

The firm and charity have secured joint funding from the UK government to develop inclusion hubs and other support services for West Yorkshire’s older LGBTQ+ community.

The support is being put in place as the older LGBTQ+ community is at a high risk of poor health, financial vulnerability and social isolation.

“The hubs aim to empower people to engage with technology on their own terms - to improve their lives, going far beyond simply learning how to use devices,” said the firm and charity.

The roll out of the digital inclusion hubs follows a pilot in Leeds. Five further digital inclusion hubs will open in Bradford, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Hebden Bridge, Harrogate and York.

Support through the hubs includes group training, peer-to-peer learning led by community volunteers, one-to-one support, and access to devices. This covers everyday tech use such as how to email and video call, to using online banking and NHS services.

Patient.info and the charity will also develop a national digital health hub and volunteer network.

Out Together chair Thomas Porteus said: “Digital confidence has become essential for accessing healthcare and managing your wellbeing, yet too many older LGBTQ+ people are still excluded.

“Through this partnership with Patient.info, we can combine trusted health expertise with safe, welcoming community spaces.

“ I am proud that Out Together is helping people take control of their digital lives and feel more connected to the support they deserve.”
