Cambridge Building Society has handed £1m to good causes during 2025 to mark its 175th anniversary, according to its latest figures.
The money has been given to charities working to tackle housing and inequality issues in Cambridgeshire and the surrounding area.
This has included the awarding of its first mulit-year grant, to The Angles Foundation. This £150,000 three-year grant will be used to expand the charity's support for survivors of domestic abuse.
It has also handed Cambridge based homelessness charity Wintercomfort £10,000 to improve its housing support and prevention service and to fund a tenancy officer.
“We wanted to make a real difference in our 175th year and we’ve done just that – record donations to good causes, a transformational investment to help tackle homelessness and, of course, lots of chocolate coins and fun with our members,” said the building society’s chief executive Peter Burrows.
“We also surpassed £2bn in assets for the first time in our history, completed our Ferndale retrofit project, won awards for our mortgage services and community programme, and continued to receive outstanding customer satisfaction scores from our members.
“Our 175th anniversary has been a truly special year, and we look forward to supporting our members and our community for many years to come.”
In addition, the building society has handed out items such as food, toiletries, towels and sleeping bags to homelessness good causes as part of its Christmas Giving Tree Campaign.
“The Christmas Giving Tree campaign has been a fantastic way for colleagues and customers to come together and support those in our community who need it most at this time of year," added Burrows.
“We are extremely thankful for the generosity shown, and it has been inspiring to see first-hand how these donations will help individuals and families during the winter months.”
