Spain wants to be fully renewable by 2050

As the European Parliament approves its Renewable Energy Directive, the Spanish government has outlined a plan to take the country to a 100 per cent renewable energy electricity system by 2050, making it far in advance of EU policy.

The first stage will be to source 70 per cent of electricity from renewables by 2030, it will then increase this to be fully renewably sourced energy within the next two decades.

EU member states have to apply the Renewable Energy Directive into national laws and take effect by 1 January 2021.
