Nestlé acts on Thai concerns

Verité has released a report into conditions in the Thai seafood industry. The report, commissioned by Nestlé concentrated on six sites - three shrimp farms, two ports of origin, and one docked fishing boat. The three-month assessment focused on forced labour and trafficking risks in the recruitment, hiring, employment and living conditions of foreign migrant in the supply chain of one of Nestlé’s key suppliers.
Verité found indicators of forced labour, trafficking, and child labour to be present among sea-based and land-based workers engaged in the production sites covered by the assessment.
As well as commission the report, Nestlé has also released its own response to the highlighted labour and human rights abuses in the seafood supply chain, publishing an Action Plan on seafood sourced from Thailand. It contains a series of actions designed to protect workers from abuses, improve working conditions and tackle unacceptable practices including juvenile and teenage working.
Commenting on the release of the Action Plan, Executive Vice President of Operations at Nestlé, Magdi Batato stated: “Nestle is committed to eliminating forced labour in our seafood supply chain in Thailand, working alongside other stakeholders to tackle this serious and complex issue. We believe that our Action Plan will help improve the lives of those affected by unacceptable practices.”
Nestlé says it will begin implementing the plan immediately and will report publicly on progress in its Society Annual Report.
