Shell stops Cambo oil field

The future of the Cambo oil field was thrown into doubt as Shell pulled out of the controversial oil field near Shetland.

In the face of repeated environmental criticism, Shell, that owned 30 per cent of the venture, has withdrawn, leaving majority stakeholder Siccar Point Energy to debate a way forward with the Government. Siccar has said it remains confident that oil production will go ahead.

Shell citied the lack of an economic case for continuing, but the severe criticism that it has faced may nave been a factor in its decision.
