Data from Ember indicates that wind and solar generated more electricity than fossil fuels in May.

This is the first-time renewables have achieved this in the EU for a full month on record, with a third generated from wind and solar (31 per cent), while fossil fuels generated 27 per cent.

Coal was the major faller, being 20 per cent down on the same period last year and gas 15 per cent.
