The John Lewis Partnership has published the latest edition of its constitution, defining what it describes as its ‘industrial democracy’ in the employee-owned business.

The company’s employees (or partners) are the only shareholders in the business, and is system of administration is defined in the company’s constitution, originally written by founder John Spedan Lewis in 1928.

The employee-owned sector of the economy is currently growing (estimated at 10 per cent per annum based on 2012 figures), with the Employee Ownership Association (EOA) reporting over 300 employee owned businesses employing more than 200,000 people in the UK, and contributing GBP30bn to UK GDP.

The john Lewis Partnership is the largest employee owned business in the UK, followed by engineering and management consultancy Mott MacDonald Group and design and engineering group Arup.
