In the UK, 60m tonnes of material which is ordered for use in building projects has to be sent to landfill sites each year. Focus Logistics wants to help reduce construction waste, working with major developers such as Berkerly, RedRow and Barratt.
The site logistics company is cleaning up and reducing waste across sites and setting simple solutions in place to ensure that these sites operate a cleaner with the result that construction waste has been cut by 25 per cent.
One of the initiatives is simple colour coded bins SMARTSegregate, an idea that harks back to a time when waste was not an option, with a range of seven colour coded 660 litre bins, from pink for plaster to grey for metal. Dedicated waste teams create a plan for the collection, management, storage and removal of all types of waste. All construction wastes are segregated on site for direct recycling of in excess of 95 per cent of on-site waste material.
Focus Logistics SMARTsegregation bins are in action at their Redrow Homes’ site with 2,900 homes in Colindale Gardens, North West London and Canary Wharf’s South Quay Plaza for Berkeley Homes, where onsite segregation is rewarding for the workforce and the contractor.
