Start-up Morand has launched a product that can recharge a car in 72 seconds.
Morand eTechnology, that is currently limited to smaller applications, could be used for city cars, drones, e-bikes, e-scooters, robotics, aggrotech, defence and potentially rail locomotives. The e hybrid system combines the characteristics of an ultracapacitor with that of a chemical battery to create a durable and ultra-fast energy pack that can be usefully recharged in seconds.
Independent testing by Geo Technology has demonstrated the ability of Morand eTechnology to recharge a 7.2kWh test unit in 120 seconds (98 per cent charging) at up to 900A/360 kW.
While there are technologies that can charge and discharge rapidly, they are almost always limited by the number of cycles they can perform before capacity degradation, but the eTechnology does so with much greater durability than other systems. Testing has demonstrated its ability to complete more than 50,000 cycles, with the longest-running test unit now approaching 70,000 cycles.
