Consultation on the role of hydrogen

The Government has invited industry and consumer groups to discuss the role of hydrogen in the UK’s gas network.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero is keen to assess the appetite for a blended gas solution after pilot programmes met resistance from the public. Blending of hydrogen with natural gas in the network could boost hydrogen production, help cut emissions, strengthen energy security and create new green jobs.

Energy Minister Lord Callanan launched a consultation on the UK pursuing a process of ‘blending’, to accelerate the creation of a new hydrogen industry.

The consultation launched today marks the next step in government’s plans to reach 10GW of hydrogen production capacity by 2030, putting the UK at the forefront of the growing hydrogen market. The views from industry and consumer groups will help inform next steps on the use of hydrogen, including through blending
