Scotmid Co-operative, which operates around 350 retail outlets across Scotland, Northern Ireland and the North of England, has named two Alzheimer’s support charities as its partners for the year.
During 2025/26 it will support Alzheimer’s Scotland as well as Alzheimer’s Society in the North of England and Northern Ireland.
“Together, we’ll make a lasting difference for people of all ages – helping children build brain healthy habits for life and supporting adults to take steps to reduce their risk and delay the onset of dementia,” said Scotmid, which runs stores, funeral directors and post offices.
“Research shows that up to 45% of dementia cases could be prevented through positive lifestyle changes.
“Through this partnership, we’ll support individuals, families and communities now – and for generations to come.”
Fundraising and awareness raising already supported by Scotmid includes Alzheimer’s Scotland’s Big Brain Tour.
This sees the charity showcase a giant inflatable brain that people can walk through to take part in brain activities.
The inflatable is called Babs the Brain, in honour of the late actress Barbara Windsor, who had dementia.
“Babs will be touring towns and communities across Scotland, helping people of all ages take steps to protect their brain health,” said Alzheimer’s Scotland.
“From teaching children healthy habits to supporting adults in making small everyday changes, Babs will show that everyone can play a part in reducing their risk of dementia and looking after their brain for the future.
“Thanks to the generous support of Scotmid’s colleagues, members and customers, we’re making brain health visible, accessible, and achievable for everyone.”
